Sustainability in healthcare

Did you know that in the UK alone, the NHS overall accounts for 4-5% of the country’s carbon emissions, equivalent to Croatia’s total annual emissions?

As a start-up medical device SME we are in the process of gaining ISO 14001:2015 accreditation as part of our commitment towards sustainable design excellence in healthcare. We consider how we impact the environment, and how the environment impacts us, as part of our day to day operations.

Sustainability can ultimately save money, improve brand reputation, engage employees and build resilience against uncertainty as well as optimise the ability to rapidly adapt to change.

Our environmental policy

Supporting environmentally sustainable healthcare for future generations.

We are a start-up medical device design and development company, based in Worcester, United Kingdom. Founded between British entrepreneur Simon Mifsud, Netherlands based venture builder NLC and the inventing team from the University of Malta, Garland Surgical Ltd was incorporated at the start of 2022.

We are striving to create and open opportunities in the market for a total hip prosthesis with the MaltaHip that could last for longer than current expectations, therefore reducing the number of hip replacement surgeries carried out globally. Our focus is to improve the rehabilitation expectations and quality of life of patients undergoing hip replacement surgery, as well as supporting healthcare systems with their productivity and sustainability goals.

Sustainability in healthcare is becoming more of a focus as governments across the globe challenge healthcare providers to reduce carbon emissions and waste. Our environmental management system ensures that we design and develop our products in the most sustainable way possible, with minimal damage to the environment. We have a focus on how we can reduce waste over the lifecycle of our products, from design and development, to packaging, to end of life disposal.

We commit to the protection of the environment, to prevention of pollution, and fulfilling our compliance obligations. Furthermore, we shall achieve continual improvement in our Environmental Management System, and environmental performance.

Garland is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. We will ensure we have objectives to target both our short-term and long-term goals.
